1900 Era Line Crew in the Bay Area
The caption says: "A maintenance crew, known as the "Long Line Patrol," traveling the Easy Bay to inspect and repair long distance telephone lines. Their routes were long and they often camped out overnight. If the weather was bad they took shelter in a farmhouse or hotel. Telephone conversations between the East Bay and San Francisco were regarded as a great novelty and crowds would gather to witness the calls. As the lines were often not in working order, especially when winds blew lines down, observers never knew what to expect."
This is why "camp" was listed in the contract.
